Description

In collaboration with the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) and introduced by Kevin Watkins, ODI's Executive Director, this event will look at the latest evidence on the linkages between climate change and human displacement, and its social, economic and cultural implications.
Research shows that rising sea levels, long spells of drought and erratic rainfall are jeopardising livelihoods in vulnerable parts of the world and leading to different types of migration. Sometimes, individuals leave affected areas to find better job prospects; other times, whole families and communities are uprooted in search of safe havens.
We hear from Professor Dominic Kniveton, a climate change and migration expert at the University of Sussex on this complex, global landscape. He shares the results of his team’s CDKN-sponsored study of climate-related displacement in Bangladesh. H.E. Mohamed Mijarul Quayes, Bangladesh High Commissioner, responds and provides a government perspective on the findings.

Nick Rance screens clips from a new documentary film by tve: Television Trust for the Environment and CDKN on the lives of Bangladeshis who see migration as an opportunity and a challenge in the face of climate change. Alex Randall of the Climate Outreach and Information Network (COIN) launches Moving Stories, a collection of testimonials from dozens of people who have been displaced by climate impacts.

Sam Bickersteth, CDKN’s Chief Executive, chairs the event, and Veena Ravichandran, CDKN’s Senior Research Advisor, offers her insights and invites audience remarks.
