A disaster occurs which has devastated the Philippines, you want to help, your community has been affected, your compassion and empathy are ignited and the spirit of Bayanihan calls to you.

Volunteering can seem like a daunting prospect; many different questions or thoughts may go through your head:

How do I start volunteering? What kind of organisation should I volunteer for? What can I do to help? Are my skills relevant to the situation? Who will look after me on the ground? Aren’t there enough people who are volunteering already?

Do some of these seem familiar to you?

Three new courses developed by the Humanitarian Leadership Academy will seamlessly guide you through the volunteering landscape of the Philippines to help you understand what volunteering is, how you can benefit and what volunteers do.

These courses will also help you to gain new skills, reaffirm your current ones and gain further insight if you are already a volunteer.

By the end of these three courses volunteers will:

  • Be equipped with effective techniques to look after their own health, resilience and wellbeing whilst volunteering.
  • Recognise and understand their individual rights as volunteers.
  • Be able to define the different types of disasters and to understand where they come from.
  • Have a clear understanding of the different organisations responding to a disaster, what they do on the ground and how they work together to help people.
  • Learn about the core principles which guide all humanitarian work and notice how they are applied in disaster response situations.
  • Be able to identify where their individual talents may fit in volunteering and why organisations need a wide range of diverse skills.
  • Understand how volunteering can boost mood, improve human connection, reduce stress and improve life expectancy

Volunteering may seem like a huge ask and something that seems inaccessible to you. By completing these courses you will gain insight to see if volunteering is something you want to do, understand how you can help, what you may learn from the experience and how you can help those around you.

Our first 360 film “You Cannot Argue with a Flood”, available both in English and Tagalog has also been added to the pathway to help make the learning experience even more engaging, by immersing learners in the conflict-torn city of Marawi in the Philippines.

Key features of the pathway

  • Target audience: potential and existing volunteers
  • Duration: One hour and a half
  • Cost: Free
  • Format: 3 interactive online courses and a 360 film
  • Personalised certificate: one received at the end of each course
