The new UN envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said that his visit to Yemen comes in support for the humanitarian team efforts that aim to ease the suffering of Yemeni people caught in the conflict.

Ahmed arrived in Sana’a on Tuesday few hours before the 5 day proposed cease-fire began.

According to Saba news agency, Ahmed would be working on trying to reach a permanent cease-fire agreement in order to provide the right climate for reviving the political process in the interest of the Yemeni people. The UN envoy made it clear that dialogue is the only way to solve the Yemeni conflict.

Members of the Security Council issued a statement expressing their deep concern about the situation in Yemen. They asked the new Envoy to hold a meeting with all Yemeni parties in order to reach a political solution according to the Gulf Co-operation Council initiative, the outputs of the National Dialogue Conference (NDC), and relevant UN resolutions. They called on all Yemeni parties to attend the talks, and welcomed any efforts that support the political transition in Yemen.

The Gulf Co-operation Council initiative which was signed in November 2011, gave the Ex President Ali Abdulla Saleh immunity in exchange of handing down his presidential power to his Vice-President, Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi. Saleh returned to Yemen, and remained the head of the ruling General People's Congress (GPC) party.
