Overview

2014 was a quiet year for Viet Nam in terms of natural disasters, allowing the Viet Nam Red Cross Society (VNRC) to focus on recovery efforts of the Wutip/Nari Typhoon operation, particularly in cash transfer programming (CTP) and capacity building in disaster preparedness and response through the development of national disaster response mechanisms. In disaster risk reduction (DRR), the VNRC continued the Mangrove Plantation – Disaster Risk Reduction (MP-DRR) project and commenced a new project to support the national community-based disaster risk management (CBDRM) programme. In the area of healthcare, the VNRC carried out activities in community-based health and first aid (CBHFA) and built capacity in water and sanitation (WatSan) in emergencies, health in emergencies and blood donation.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) support to VNRC in the above areas were complemented by organizational development (OD) support in human resource management, volunteer management, financial development and resource mobilization (RM); as well as in humanitarian diplomacy at the national and international levels, and enhanced coordination with in-country Partner National Societies (PNSs) for more effective programme implementation.
