The northeastern, north central and northwestern area of Guatemala, known as the “dry corridor”, has been affected by a prolonged dry spell that reached a record of 45 days without rain in some areas. The lack of rain resulted in crop failures (70% loss of beans and up to 80% loss of corn, compared with the 2013 cycle) for families that practice subsistence and below-subsistence farming.

Harvest losses resulted in the depletion of food reserves, which increased acute and severe malnutrition cases and food insecurity levels, leading to deterioration of sanitary conditions and water quality.
