MANILA, PHILIPPINES (31 July 2001) - Measures to contain erosion of the Jamuna-Meghna riverbank in Bangladesh will be identified through a US$1 million technical assistance (TA) grant to be provided by the Asian Development Bank.

The assistance, financed by ADB's Japan Special Fund, will also prepare and implement pilot systems for riverbank erosion control and management. The assistance will be undertaken in two phases. Phase one will comprise flood monitoring and data collection while phase two will identify options to contain riverbank erosion.

River erosion is a perennial problem in Bangladesh, causing loss of lands and livelihood along major rivers. The assistance will target threatened sections of flood embankments of the Meghna-Dhonagoda Irrigation Project and the Pabna Irrigation and Rural Development Project, both ADB-supported. Structural and non-structural interventions are needed to prevent potential loss of land and livelihoods.

ADB will finance 80 percent of the total project cost estimated at US$1.25 million and the government will fund the balance. Bangladesh Water Development Board will be the executing agency. Commencing in July 2001, the TA will be implemented over eight months. The TA is expected to lead to an investment project to mitigate river erosion.

The Japan Special Fund, set up in 1988 to support ADB's technical assistance programs, has financed 64 projects totaling US$39.5 million in Bangladesh.
