WomanCare has donated 11 manual vacuum aspiration plus kits (MVA Plus) to HealthRight’s Partnership for Maternal and Newborn Health Plus project for use in partner facilities in Marakwet East and West Kenya. MVA Plus helps health care workers save the lives of pregnant women who experience bleeding due to an induced or spontaneous miscarriage in the first three months of pregnancy. During the donation ceremony, Dr. Morris Buliva of WomanCare noted that Kenya is not on track to meet MDG 4 and 5 (reduce child mortality and improve maternal health), and attributed this to a number of factors, including infections and bleeding due to unsafe abortions. Kenya’s first lady, Margaret Kenyatta, has spearheaded a campaign to address maternal deaths, and Dr. Buliva added encouraged support of her efforts: “We all should work together in a small or big way to complement the great work being done by Kenya’s first lady in her Beyond Zero Campaign.” He also praised HealthRight for providing important services to hard to reach communities. HealthRight is very grateful for WomanCare’s support.
