Cholera alert Ghana

The cholera outbreak in Accra, Ghana has led to more than 1,000 cases in three weeks. As of 31st of July 2014, at least 1 119 cases of cholera and 17 deaths were recorded in the Great Accra. Nine (9) districts out of sixteen (16) recorded cases. Accra metro and Dadekotpon are the most affected district and account for 87% of cases.

The ongoing epidemic in Ghana has extended to Togo. Between July 25th and August 13th, 6 cases of cholera with no death were recorded. Samplings from 5 patients were positive to vibrio cholera. Four (4) out of six (6) cases registered are Ghanaian. One patient is a Ghanaian mechanic who works at night in Lomé and returns to Ghana each morning. Two (2) cases recorded are Ghanaian fishermen from the same family. They arrived in Katanga fishermen’s camp in Lomé the day before the symptoms. This cosmopolitan camp is regularly affected by outbreaks of cholera and hosts in precarious conditions 13,000 people (from Ghana, Togo and Benin) depending on fishing and related activities.
