MONROVIA (LIBERIA), August 25, 2014 -- Friends of the Earth International has launched an appeal to help Friends of the Earth Liberia and local partners to provide community relief, support and protection against the deadly Ebola virus. All funds received (100%) will be transferred to Liberia. [1]

Friends of the Earth Liberia - a small organization consisting almost exclusively of local staff - is working with other civil society organizations to raise awareness about personal hygiene and safety measures, and gathering and distributing disinfectants, buckets, and soap to vulnerable communities. The medical charity MSF has warned that the international response to this unfolding tragedy to date has been inadequate and that the situation “is deteriorating faster – and moving faster – than we can respond to”. [2] “While we wait for international help, we can do a lot ourselves. Otherwise, help might be too late for thousands of Liberians,” said Nora Bowier of Friends of the Earth Liberia.

Friends of the Earth Liberia/ Sustainable Development Institute, Foundation for Community Initiatives, Save My Future Foundation and Social Entrepreneurs for Sustainable Development are jointly launching a Community Awareness and Support Team (CAST) to support national efforts to slow down and reverse the spread of the Ebola virus across Liberia. The CAST initiative is an emergency response effort that aims to deliver Ebola awareness materials, hygiene and sanitation supplies to 1,000 households (or 10,000 people) by September 30.
