CERF ALLOCATES $48.7 MILLION FOR HUMANITARIAN RESPONSE IN THE REGION DURING THE FIRST SEMESTER OF 2014

During the second quarter of 2014, the Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC), Valerie Amos, allocated from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) US$23.3 million to Chad, Cameroon, Congo, Guinea, Mali and Sierra Leone. These allocations bring the total CERF funding approved for the region during the first semester of 2014 to $48.7 million.

The crisis in Central African Republic (CAR) is the source of 53 per cent of CERF disbursements for the region. Some $10.8 million has been allocated to CAR directly while neighbouring Chad received $7.7 million, Cameroon received $4 million and the Republic of Congo $1.9 million to provide lifesaving assistance to displaced people from CAR.

CERF is a funding mechanism for quick and effective support for humanitarian emergency response. In 2013, CERF provided over $104.5 million to 14 countries in West and Central Africa.

$21.4 MILLION ALLOCATED THROUGH THE UNDER FUNDED EMERGENCIES (UFE) WINDOW

During the first semester of 2014, the ERC allocated a total of $21.4 million to support under-funded humanitarian projects in 2 countries in the region: Chad and Mali.

Mali received $11.4 million to provide critical assistance to internally displaced people and host communities and to address the needs of people vulnerable to food insecurity and malnutrition.

$10 million was allocated to Chad. These funds helped humanitarian partners to provide life-saving assistance to conflict affected people in Eastern and Southern Chad and to fund food security, nutrition and WASH projects.
