Iraq: $500 million to respond to massive humanitarian crisis
A surge in violence between Government forces and armed groups has displaced an estimated 1.2 million Iraqis since January 2014. Violence has been most intense in Anbar Governorate in north-western Iraq, where approximately 550,000 people have been displaced by fighting centred on Fallujah and Ramadi.
In June armed groups took control of Iraq’s second largest city of Mosul and a string of other cities, leading to the displacement of over 650,000 people, many of whom fled with few or no resources.
Every day, more and more people are being displaced. Access to basic services such as clean water, sanitation and health care in areas controlled by armed groups is decreasing. In response, humanitarian actors are scaling up operations to respond to the rapidly rising needs.
$500 million
A US$500 million grant from the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia means that the United Nations and its humanitarian partners can rapidly scale up the delivery of assistance to the people affected by this crisis.
