Fiji Red Cross responds to Dengue outbreak by working and assisting Ministry of Health

Once again in our function as auxiliary to the Government of Fiji, a Technical Team of three staff from National Office were deployed to the Western Division to assist and support all branches on the 12th March in the Dengue Outbreak Campaign. Fiji Red Cross Branches in the Western Division mainly Sigatoka Branch, Nadi Branch, Lautoka Branch, Ba Branch, Tavua Branch and Rakiraki Branch have joined the Ministry of Health efforts in responding to the dengue outbreak that has so far seen 15,000 people with numbers continuing to rise.

A total of 56 Volunteers were trained on “What Dengue is”, “Mode of transmission”, “Signs and Symptoms”, “Control and Preventative Measures” and the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) was set up in theLautoka Branch.

Fiji Red Cross volunteers are engaged in the following activities:

i) face to face advocacy informing the public on the causes of dengue, symptoms of dengue and to seek immediate medical attention if they have any of the symptoms.

ii) assist nurses in “Cool sponging clients” to control fever whilst waiting to be seen by the doctors

iii) assist in the clean-up campaign of mosquito breeding places in communities, towns and villages

iv) assisting nurses with provision of water and juices as they await to be seen by a doctor

v) All health risks concerns in regards to Dengue control were referred to relevant authorities.

Based on statistics we’ve compiled so far, Fiji Red Cross Volunteers have reached a total of 16,001 people , Male – 8066, Female – 7945 in the Western division alone.
