COMPLEX EMERGENCY IN KP AND FATA

More than 20,000 people who fled sectarian violence in central Kurram Agency in 2011 were able to return to their homes in the Alisherzai area this month with the support of the Government and humanitarian partners. More returns are expected to the Tirah Valley in May from amongst the 80,000 people who sought refuge from hostilities between rival armed groups and the security operations against non-state armed actors in March and April 2013. The expected returns to the Tirah Valley will be the second of two phases; the first in October 2013 saw 56,000 people return to their villages.

DENGUE OUTBREAK

The number of cases of dengue fever in the first quarter of 2014 is nearly three times in the same period in 2013 and more than four times in 2012. Authorities cite recent unexpected rainfall in various parts of the country as the reason for the increased cases. WHO together with health authorities and partners are stepping up preventive measures against a further outbreak although authorities warn that forecasts of a rainy spell predicted from May until July could provide a conducive breeding environment for dengue mosquitoes.
