SOUTH PACIFIC

As of 25 Mar, there were 18,969 cases of dengue fever in Fiji, with 12 confirmed deaths and four suspected deaths. As the disease spreads throughout Fiji, the Ministry of Health will now only report instances of dengue-like illness rather than confirmed lab tests to allow a greater focus on treatment. In New Caledonia, there have been 122 reported cases of dengue, and in French Polynesia, cases are declining with a total of 1,811 and one death. Zika virus is also present, with 8,600 cases in French Polynesia, 276 in New Caledonia and 197 in the Cook Islands.

VANUATU

The National Disaster Management Office has confirmed 11 fatalities after search and rescue teams found additional bodies from villages in South Santo destroyed by flash flooding and landslides during Tropical Cyclone Lusi that struck on 11 Mar. An assessment team has finalized assessments of five affected provinces and OCHA has deployed an information management and mapping specialist to assist with analysis.

MYANMAR

UN agencies and INGOs have temporarily relocated a large number of staff from Sittwe, Rakhine State, after civil unrest led to severe damage to NGO and UN offices, warehouses, and living quarters in the Sittwe area on 26 and 27 Mar. The impact on humanitarian operations is currently being assessed and steps are being taken to secure alternative premises to continue to meet the humanitarian needs of vulnerable people in the state.

SRI LANKA

Prolonged dry weather affecting around 247,000 families in 16 districts has prompted preparations to undertake a rapid needs assessment in 14 priority districts. The Ministry of Disaster Management has distributed a total of US$ 2.3 million to kick-start the response to procure drinking water, dry rations and water tanks. The Department of Irrigation and the Departent of Meteorology forecast that the average rainfall from the upcoming first inter-monsoon period will not bring sufficient water to fill the reservoirs and therefore they expect a low cultivation during the upcoming irrigated agriculture season in May 2014.

MARSHALL ISLANDS

Drought conditions are evident across the far northern islands and atolls of the Marshall Islands with minimal rainfall recorded in early 2014.
Conservation measures are needed to prevent the depletion of wells and water catchments, and the health of food crops should be closely monitored. The current situation is similar to 2013, when the Government declared a state of emergency in May due to a prolonged dry season.
