Southern Africa: Weekly Report (11 to 17 February 2014)
Namibia:
A cholera outbreak has been reported in Katutura on the edge of Windhoek, including 11 suspected cholera cases, 3 confirmed cases and 1 death reported.
The poor WASH conditions and open defecation is of concern. Katutura had a population 43,109 in the 2011 census, although unofficial records suggest around 200,000 inhabitants due to immigration, which has been exacerbated by drought conditions.
As of 13 February, Kunene Region reported 486 suspected cholera cases and 15 deaths (case fatality rate of 3.1%), although there is no link to the Katutura cholera as it is a different strain.
An IEC campaign will begin in Windhoek as soon as possible including the use of radio.Testing of water in Windhoek is being conducted by the Khomas Regional Council.
Madagascar:
Heavy rain since early February caused damage in the mid-west. As of 13 Feb, 809 people were affected, 476 displaced and 3 injured. BNGRC is providing assistance and food aid to Miarinarivo, the most affected district.
Mozambique:
Messalo basin, Lugenda sub-basin and Pungue basin are above alert levels. The bridge linking Mirate and Nairoto is flooded, affecting access and some areas along the EN6 road in Tica and Mutua are flooded. As an upward trend is forecast for the Messalo basin there is a possiblity of flooding in neighbouring communities.
Malawi:
The total of 9,033 households (around 45,000 people) in 19 districts have been affected to date, including 1,646 households affected by floods , 8 deaths by lightning and 21 families displaced by land wrangles. Of the affected households, only 265 households are yet to be assisted; DoDMA is responding to the needs of the affected people.
Seychelles:
As of 1 February 2014, approximately 4,435 people were affected by flooding. The IFRC issued a DREF of CHF69,342 (approx. US$77,800) for flood relief.
Tanzania:
An estimated 9,493 people were affected by floods in the Morogoro region on 21 January, although this figure is still to be confirmed. IFRC issued a DREF for flood relief of CHF180,676 (approx. US$202,700), which aims at assisting 2,000 people.
