Summary: CHF 242,501 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 5 June 2013 to support the Armenian Red Cross Society (ARCS) in delivering immediate assistance to some 4.000 beneficiaries (almost 900 households) affected by a hail storm in Armavir region of Armenia. From 12 to 17 May 2013, the hail damaged almost the total yield capacity of more than half of the communities in Armavir region in Armenia.

According to experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, the damaged capacity can be restored in no sooner than 2-3 years. Moreover, there were also several cases of damaged houses and cattle stable roofs.

The ARCS distributed. in close cooperation with the regional and local authorities, 2,090 parcels of food and 2,090 hygiene parcels, aimed to cover the basic needs of the beneficiaries in the 14 most affected communities, based on the level of losses indicated by Government and ARCS assessments. The distribution of relief was conducted during the period from 2 July to 15 July 2013. ARCS Staff and volunteers actively participated in the relief operation.

The DREF allocation has been utilized in accordance with the approved budget. There is a final balance of CHF 3,515 which needs to be returned to the DREF account. 80 per cent of the DREF allocations has been replenished by the European Commission`s DG Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO). Other major donors and partners of DREF include the Australian, American and Belgian Governments, the Austrian Red Cross, the Canadian Red Cross and the Canadian Government, the Danish Red Cross and the Danish Government, the Irish and the Italian Governments, the Japanese Red Cross Society, the Luxembourg Government, the Monaco Red Cross and the Monaco Government, the Netherlands Red Cross and the Netherlands Government, the Norwegian Red Cross and the Norwegian Government, the Spanish Government, the Swedish Red Cross and the Swedish Government, the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID), the Medtronic and Z Zurich Foundations, and other corporate and private donors.
