Rwandans expelled from Tanzania in dire need of humanitarian assistance
In July the Tanzanian government announced that all “illegal aliens” had to leave the country. As a result, nearly 11,500 people of Rwandan origin had arrived in Rwanda from Tanzania by the end of September 2013.
The expelled Rwandans have been accommodated in the Rukara and Kiyanzi transit facilities. Since most of the expellees arrived in Rwanda without any belongings, they are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. In response, the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has provided a rapid response grant of US$2,392,374 to seven United Nations agencies and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The allocations are expected to benefit 10,000 people.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has received $99,825 to provide water, sanitation and hygiene facilities.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has received $125,174 to implement vaccination campaigns and to raise awareness about the potential spread of contagious diseases among the affected people.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has received $360,004 to provide basic household items to the expellees upon arrival at the transit facilities.
Through an allocation of $843,337, the World Food Programme (WFP) will provide emergency food assistance.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has received $99,831 to ensure access to basic health services, while the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has received $96,882 to provide reproductive health services.
The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-WOMEN) has received $93,561 to mitigate the risk of and respond to gender-based violence.
With an allocation of $673,760, IOM will provide temporary shelter assistance.
