The emphasis in Chad remains on education, but following a season of torrential rains, some classrooms have been badly damaged or have collapsed. Funds have been made available for the rebuilding or repair of some of these classrooms, whilst Cord has scheduled meetings to find workable short term solutions for those that would not be repaired immediately.

The President of the Parents Associations welcomed the project, describing it as “great humanitarian work” and praising the fact that the Allen Trust’s support to Cord enabled such an extensive response to an urgent need to rehabilitate classrooms damaged by the weather.

The Secretary General of the Primary Education Committee, Arbab Matar, said, “This construction is already contributing to the development of the education system. Moreover, school is a place of peace and protection.”

Cord launched its regular communication to parents, calling on them to enrol their children, and distributed essential supplies to schools, including registers, books and pens.

Larger numbers of children are enrolled in school and succeed in examinations due to the quality education they receive. Some of them have benefited from scholarships to attend universities while others are offered skills training opportunities.

But beyond the infrastructure maintenance and the practicalities of the new school year, Cord are continuing to look to the future. With the ongoing trial against former Chadian President Habre on charges including crimes against humanity, the focus on peace is more prevalent than ever. 89 teachers have been trained on the important issue of Peace Education, allowing educators to incorporate peace education elements into their programming for the new school year. These included education for a culture of peace and citizenship, financial management, and the advantages of girls’ education.

It is essential that the capacity of local partners to develop peace continues to be supported as the long term effects to each new generation cannot be underestimated.
