NAIROBI, Kenya (PANA) - Police in Nairobi Thursday confirmed that 14 people were killed early this week and several others injured when their vehicles ran over landmines in two separate incidents near the Ethiopia-Kenya border town of Moyale.
State television reported the incidents Wednesday night, saying the first occurred at Dugo, two km from Moyale, which lies some 800 km north of Nairobi.

It said a pick-up truck transporting 15 passengers exploded after it ran over the landmine, killing 14 passengers.

A female passenger, who survived the horror, is recovering at the government hospital in Moyale, police said.

The report said the second incident involved four Kenyans who got seriously injured when a sugar transport lorry on which they were travelling to Moyale ran over a second mine at the same place.

The mines, believed to be detonated by remote control, were thought to have been planted by militiamen of the Oromo Liberation Front who infiltrate from Ethiopia.

Landmines blew up several vehicles in Moyale in 1999, leaving a death toll of three people. Police then blamed the front.

Meanwhile, the Kenya News Agency Thursday reported from Marsabit, 250 km south of Moyale, that three people were killed and three others seriously injured Tuesday during an attack by cattle rustlers in the Labeise area bordering Lake Turkana.

Administrators in Marsabit confirmed the incident, claiming that the raiders stole unspecified herds of cattle.
