(New York, 11 november 2013) – Below is the text of a letter sent electronically to all Global Compact business participants on 11 November from Georg Kell, Executive Director, UN Global Compact:
On 8 November, the Philippines experienced what is potentially the worst natural disaster in its history. With nearly 10 million people affected and more than 600,000 people currently displaced, there is an urgent need for assistance in the wake of the devastation wrought by Typhoon Haiyan.
The United Nations and its humanitarian partners are ramping up relief efforts in the Central Philippines. Local resources and relief are being mobilized to the affected areas, but the scale of the event calls for additional support. The international business community can play an important role.
UN Global Compact participants wishing to support relief and humanitarian efforts can respond in the following ways:
Make a financial contribution to the UN Central Emergencies Response Fund. Register with the UN-Business Partnerships Hub website to offer goods or services. In the Global Compact spirit of shared responsibility for a better world, the UN Global Compact urges your company to consider helping in this time of need.
