OVERVIEW

In Rakhine, the inter-communal violence in June and October 2012 resulted in at least 143,000 people displaced. Durable solutions that avoid community segregation need to be implemented urgently through trust building and reconciliation. Early recovery and longer-term development efforts for affected populations also need to be strengthened and require funding.

The conflict in Kachin and northern Shan States has displaced an estimated 100,000 people. As of September 2013, the number of registered IDPs staying in camps is nearly 91,000 including 52,000 in the areas beyond government control. Since the beginning of the conflict in June 2011, a total of 15 cross-line missions were conducted to border areas, covering only approximately 58 per cent of the IDPs (more than 30,000 out of 52,000) in the areas beyond Government control. Sustained and regular access for international organizations to provide assistance to IDPs in the areas beyond government control is essential.
