IDP RELOCATIONS
In September 2013, the Somali Government expressed its desire to restart the stalled Mogadishu internally displaced people (IDP) relocation process. The process was initiated in January 2013, but stalled in July due to the government’s inability to provide security in the potential relocation site in Daynile district.
The process was also dogged by spontaneous evictions and parallel ‘relocation’ of IDPs by gatekeepers (self-appointed custodians of IDPs), which resulted in the movement of thousands of IDPs to lands between Km7 and Km13, along Afgooye road. The majority of these IDPs were to be moved to Dayniile through the relocation plan.
Due to these developments, the Somalia Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) is reviewing its engagement on the process and is discussing with the government, alternative strategies of dealing with the IDP situation
POLIO CAMPAIGN
Response to polio outbreak continues even as the impact is beginning to be seen.The number of new cases from Banadir, Somalia (the epicentre of the outbreak) has declined.
NEW DEAL
The New Deal Compact, an initiative to help Somalia transition into stability, was endorsed by the international community in a conference in Brussels on 16 September. The 1.8 billion Euros (2.4 billion US$) pledged is expected to consolidate the political and security progress that have been made so far.
