$40. That’s how much it costs to secure a clean water source for someone in East Timor.

By the end of June supporters of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Australia had given enough to secure safe water sources for more than 18,000 people as part of the agency’s Neighbours in Need Appeal.

“Often poverty is just next door,” said Mark Webster, CEO of ADRA Australia. “In our own communities and in the countries that we call neighbours thousands experience hardship that is difficult to comprehend.”

“Just over the metaphoric, and sometimes literal, fence, are people who lack access to clean water, good nutrition, health care and opportunities for education and employment. They’re just next door, but our lives are worlds apart.”

Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, the funds from the Neighbours in Need Appeal will allow ADRA to continue a range of life-changing projects including:

  • Providing access to clean water and hygiene training to thousands of East Timorese.
  • Community meals projects which provide warm meals to homeless and disadvantaged Australians.
  • A flying medical clinic that will provide health services to communities in Papua New Guinea’s highlands.

“I’d like to thank everyone who helped us raise $734,000 – our second-highest ever end-of-financial year total.”

But there is more to do.

“Our aim was to raise $800,000, enough to assist a total of 22,000 people in the coming year,” said Mr Webster. “We didn’t meet our target, but we will be working hard to support those who need it most.”
