Situation overview

  1. Seven cases of wild poliovirus (polio) were confirmed in Southern Somalia in May. These are the first cases reported in Somalia since 2007, when the country was declared polio free. The first case was diagnosed in a child in Banadir on 9 May. 11 more cases have been detected, nine in Banadir and surrounding areas, one in Bay region and one in Middle Shabelle region. An outbreak response campaign, led by the Federal Government of Somalia, WHO and UNICEF was conducted in May, reaching over 450,000 children in Banadir region and Afgooye district in Lower Shabelle region. A nationwide polio campaign was launched on 17 June, targeting over 3 million children under age 5. Similar campaigns were also carried out in Kenya, Ethiopia and Yemen.

  2. Funding for the 2013 Consolidated Appeal Process (CAP) has been low. As at the end of May, the CAP was only 19 per cent funded at US$256 million, representing a shortfall of more than $1 billion. Key lifesaving clusters such as food security, health, nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) have received only 20 per cent or less of their requirements. This is likely to have significant impact on the operations of these clusters.
