(16th March 2013) - The department of education in Yei River County, Central Equatoria State is introducing tough measures to deal with poor school attendance.

The county education director, Charles Lumori has instructed head teachers and duty masters to take daily roll calls and report students who miss school.

Lumori says pupils who are found to have missed school will be punished and made to work in the school farm.

“This is going to be a very serious strategy that we are going to inform all the head teachers to be aware especially in the town schools were children are attracted to other town activities during lessons time. The teachers especially the duty masters in the schools must ensure that there is a proper attendant of the children,” says Lumori.

This comes after it was noted that many children are missing school to go to video halls and to engage in small businesses such as the selling of clothes.
