A grant contract was signed between the Representative Office of Japan in Ramallah, and Red Crescent Society for Gaza Strip. Mr. Junya Matsuura, Ambassador for Palestinian Affairs / Representative of Japan to the Palestinian Authority and Mr. Younis Al-Jaro, Chairman of the Society signed the grant contract of the project for establishing an Endoscopy Unit at the Haidar Abdul Shafi Medical Center in Gaza City. The amount of the project funded by the Government of Japan through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, known as (GGP), is US$ 64,464.

This grant will be utilized to procure endoscopy equipment in the Haidar Abdul Shafi Medical Center, which will allow patients, especially the poor, to receive accurate diagnoses and necessary care without severe economic and physical burdens, nor delay. Patients are currently either transferred to other medical centers or hospitals that are far and more expensive or they are diagnosed based on X-ray or ultrasound tests which may be inaccurate. So, this project will ease the people’s access to gastrointestinal endoscopy service in the Gaza City, where a very limited number of hospitals are able to perform it despite the City’s large population and a relatively high incidence of gastrointestinal diseases, and thus it will contribute to improve the overall health status in the region.

Since 1993 Japan has provided about $1.3 billion to Palestinians. In 2012 Japan has extended approximately 67.7 million dollars of assistance. GGP projects have been formulated in collaboration with the Palestinian Authority through MoPAD since 2010.
