GENERAL SITUATION
As of 08:00 hrs 19 November 1999, and as reported by the Prime Ministry Crisis Management Center, the number of fatalities has reached 675 and the number of people who are injured has reached 4,794.

The OSOCC has moved to Bolu, leaving one UNDAC member in Duzce to support the remaining international SAR teams.

To date and as reported by the Prime Ministry Crisis Management Center, the following relief items, including personnel for SAR and other activities, have been dispatched to the affected area:

Country Level International Response

A detailed list of Donor's Contributions, based on information provided to the UN Resident Coordinator's Office by the Diplomatic Missions in Turkey as well as information collected by the UNDAC teams in the field, is attached.

Assessment Results

Shelter

The overall need for winterized tents is approximately 22,000 (5 persons per tent) for the whole region.

Kaynasli Crisis Management Center reported that there are 1,200 persons living in 300 winterized tents, 8,256 persons living in 2,064 non-winterized tents and 2,500 persons with no tents at all.

Electricity

US electrical experts reported that the 12 transformers out of 16 in Kaynasli are working. The main priority is to distribute electricity to the tents. No survey on electricity by an international team has yet been done in Duzce or Bolu. The US assessment team is leaving today.

Health

As reported by members of the OSOCC, the Russian field hospital has departed. The Israeli and Egyptian field hospitals will stay for 8 days and 15 days, respectively. The Japanese medical team has established a clinic in Duzce. Turkish hospitals have not requested any specific assistance.

It was also reported that there is presently no indication of any significant increase in diarrhoeal diseases following the earthquake.

Sanitation

The US assessment team has surveyed the whole region and report that a minimum of 3,400 latrines are urgently needed. (1,500 in Duzce, 600 in Kaynasli and 1,300 in Bolu)

IMMEDIATE RELIEF NEEDS

Winterized tents continue to be the most important need. Attached is a list of outstanding needs by sector.

INFORMATION MEETING

The UNDP Deputy Resident Representative chaired an information meeting with the donor community in Ankara, during which the UNDAC Team Leader, Mr. Gerhard Putman-Cramer informed about the activities carried out by the OSOCC so far, the support provided to the international SAR teams, results of the needs assessment missions and priority needs. A special remark was made concerning the excellent cooperation displayed by the national authorities, the armed forces and national SAR teams. Presentations were also made by the Representatives of UNICEF and UNFPA on their response activities in the field.
