The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) continues to monitor the election vote counting process and any vulnerabilities associated with the same through the 64 Branches and Eight Regions countrywide. The situation as reported countrywide as of today 7th March 2013; 10:30am is as follows:

The Lower Eastern Region

The situation in the Lower Eastern Region has been reported as generally calm especially in Kitui, Machakos and Makueni counties, although some businesses remained closed in Nairobi as people wait for results to be announced.

The Upper Eastern and Central Regions

The situation has been reported as relatively calm but there is a lot of anxiety due to the slow process of releasing results. Areas being monitored by KRCS include Moyale, Isiolo and Marsabit. The KRCS Regional office has also strengthened the human capacity in Marsabit and Moyale and prepositioned two extra vehicles in Moyale. Central is generally calm although anxiety over the slow process of releasing results has also been reported here.

The West Kenya Region

The Regions have reported calmness across the whole Region. The Preparedness team is meeting with other partners from the Region to compare notes on the ongoings and to forge a way forward in any gaps identified. The market prices are reported to be escalating with most businesses still closed as people wait for the elections results to be announced.

The North and South Rift Regions

Relative calm has been reported in the Region and along the borders. The Region has reported limited transport as a result of the tensions arising from waiting for results. The Region is monitoring the situation.

Coast Region

The announcement of results ended peacefully by yesterday. The Regional team is on standby. The Situation in Kwale has gone back to normalcy even though; many shops are still closed due to the anxiety in the area.Kenya Red Cross Action is all Regions include:

Putting in place risk mitigation measures as stated below:

  • Monitoring through the EOC and National taskforce

  • Strategic positioning of human capacity and stocks.

  • Reinforcing volunteer network in 64 Branches and 8 Regions

  • Liaison with other partners including the GoK at different levels, National and International humanitarian organisations.

  • Integrating our preparedness and response within respective HUBs.

  • Sharing real time information and analyses with the various stakeholders.
