1 . The United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security decided to extend assistance totaling 321,000 US dollars (approximately 26 million yen) to a project entitled "Human Security in Africa: Assessment and Capacity Building to Promote Sustainable Peace and Development". This Fund was established through the initiative of the Government of Japan to promote human security in 1999.

2 . The project is implemented by the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) to promote and disseminate the human security concept, norms and practices to enhance understanding and acceptance of the concept among African countries with the aim of achieving sustainable peace and development. UNCRD implements this project in cooperation with the African Union (AU) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Offices in these four countries, recognizing the roles that regional organizations play. The activities will include the following:

— Identifying human security concerns in the targeted countries arising out of poverty, environmental degradation, conflicts, political and health problems, involuntary resettlements and globalization etc and publishing human security assessment report
— Enhancing the planners’ understanding of human security concept through workshops and increasing the resilience of individuals and communities exposed to various human insecurities due to economic, social, political and environmental threats
— Advocating the concept of human security and deepening its understanding among policy makers and representatives of regional organizations through seminars and a conference.

3 . This project is expected to promote human security in Africa.
