Restoring family links and tracing missing persons

  • Collected and distributed 59 Red Cross messages containing family news, working in conjunction with the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society.

  • Facilitated the exchange of 76 verbal messages between Bangladeshis detained abroad and their families back home.

  • Assisted with the repatriation of five Bangladeshi nationals from abroad and of two Nepali citizens to Nepal.

  • Carried out a forensic capacity assessment and conducted three training sessions for first responders on the management of dead bodies in the wake of disaster.

Detainee welfare

  • Worked with the Bangladesh Red Crescent to distribute clothing and hygiene kits to foreign detainees in Bangladesh.

Health

  • Supported the establishment of a new physical rehabilitation centre in Chittagong.

  • Provided training and technical assistance to the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP), helping the Centre provide 354 orthotic devices and 35 prostheses for 389 people with disabilities.

  • Enabled the CRP to run vocational training for six people with disabilities.

  • Worked with the Bangladesh Red Crescent to provide five Basic First Aid Training (FAT) courses and one FAT Train the Trainers' course for 123 officers of the Bangladesh Police Service and Rapid Action Battalion.

Support for the Bangladesh Red Crescent

  • Helped the Bangladesh Red Crescent carry out a series of awareness-raising campaigns to end misuse of the red crescent emblem.

  • Conducted a workshop for 35 staff and volunteers of the Bangladesh Red Crescent on the Safer Access framework, which covers the provision of emergency care during violence.

Promotion of international humanitarian law

  • Discussed with the Bangladesh Armed Forces (BAF) the inclusion of international humanitarian law in their training curriculum

  • Ran eight sessions to raise awareness of international humanitarian law among 486 BAF personnel.

  • Conducted two 'Training of Trainers' courses for 62 members of the BAF, including 20 religious teachers.

  • Ran 25 sessions on international humanitarian law and human rights law, with an emphasis on the basic principles governing the use of force and firearms, for 2,078 law enforcement officers of the Bangladesh Police Service and Rapid Action Battalion, plus four such sessions for 200 members of the Border Guard Bangladesh.

  • Ran three teacher-training programmes for more than 100 educators, organized a meeting for deans and heads of department of 23 law faculties and sponsored five participants – lawmakers, government officials, academics and members of the armed forces – to attend regional conferences and training sessions on IHL.

  • Organized moot court competitions to foster an understanding of IHL among law students.

  • Discussed accession to/ratification of IHL-related treaties and their transposition into domestic law with the authorities.

  • Ran dissemination events at the Islamic University of Kushtia, the Islamic University of Technology, the International Islamic University Chittagong and the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh, to foster dialogue on Islamic jurisprudence and international humanitarian law.
