Government to take measures on Akobo’s murder of over 100 people

The government of South Sudan has said that it is going to take measures to ensure that the recent incident that took place in Akobo West sub-county does not repeat itself.

A high level delegation from the national government lead by the Vice President, Riek Machar and NGO's representative arrived in Bor, Jonglei State on their way to Walgak, Akobo West sub-County.

Machar said they are going as the government to pay condolence to the families of last week’s attack that lead to loss of over 100 lives.

He said the government condemns the incident.

“We are visiting Jonglei, particularly Akobo West where the incident of over 100 people were killed in a cattle raid by criminals coming from Murle land. We are visiting the place to give our condolence to the population there and expressing also our condemnation on what happened. We really call for calm in the area. We will also be visiting Pibor to talk to the people there so that they can caution this criminals if they have a way to access them,” says Machar.

The vice president mentioned that the delegation is also taking medicines and non-food items to the affected population.

“In the delegation, we have the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and the Minister of Health. We are planning for relief effort to the area in particular, drugs and non-food items which we have to run and take to the area. We are going to bring relief and take to the area. We are also going to take measures as government to ensure that, what happen doesn’t repeats itself,” Machar added.
