To assist local people with land legislation and prevention of related conflicts, several organizations held a four-day workshop in the Warrap State capital Kuajok, which ended today.

The activity, organized under the theme “Effective land administration towards sustainable urban growth”, was hosted by the UN Development Programme, UNMISS, the Norwegian Refugee Committee and Warrap Ministry of Physical Infrastructure.

The workshop focused mainly on the national Land Act, but also included discussions on land allocation to returnees, causes of conflict and development of road maps to resolve land issues in Kuac North, a payam (district) bordering Kuajok.

Land distribution remains a contested issue in Warrap State, where about 31,000 returnees have settled in Kuajok alone.

Opening the workshop, Warrap State Governor Nyandeng Maleic said it was a vital step forward in addressing land-related problems in Kuac North.

“This is an opportunity for you to understand the borders of ownership … coexist with government and use the land to develop Warrap State,” the governor said.

Also attending the workshop were South Sudan Land Commission Chairperson Robert Luki, state ministers, women and youth representatives, local media and experts from international non-governmental organizations.

As the workshop closed, participants adopted an action plan encouraging dialogue between parties to land disputes.

Similar workshops will be held across Warrap in the coming months.
