Democratic People's Republic of Korea: Floods (MDRKP004), DREF operation final report

Summary:

CHF 300,969 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on August, 2012 to support the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Red Cross in delivering immediate assistance to some 10,000 beneficiaries and to replenish 2,500 family disaster preparedness stocks.

DPRK Red Cross, with the support from IFRC, carried out its flood response and relief operation in South Phyongan, North Phyongan, South Hamgyong, North Hamgyong, Kangwon, Ryanggang and Jagang provinces which was severely affected by flash flooding in June-July 2012. The DPRK Red Cross immediately distributed 9,014 family disaster relief items to flood victims like tarpaulins, quilts, cooking sets, jerry cans, water purification tablets and 3,781 family hygiene kits. Approximately 1,080 cubic metres of drinkable water were produced by Red Cross water purification plants and delivered to approximately 10,000 people per day in flood- affected areas. Over 4,128 Red Cross volunteers were mobilized for evacuation, rescue, first aid, distribution of emergency relief items to the affected people and hygiene promotion among community people in close cooperation and coordination with local authority and other public organization. Funds from this DREF operation was used to replenished relief items received by 2,500 families affected by the flood. All activities planned have been implemented and reported on. There remains a balance of CHF 24,061 which will be returned to DREF.

The European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (DG ECHO), Canadian Red Cross/ Canadian government and Netherlands Red Cross/ Netherlands government made contributions towards the replenishment of the DREF allocation made to this operation.

The major donors to the DREF are the Red Cross Societies and governments of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the U.S.A., as well as DG ECHO, the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the Medtronic, and Z Zurich Foundations and other corporate and private donors.
