The United States recently provided an additional $4.2 million in emergency aid to victims of violence in Rakhine State. This assistance, provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), brings the overall U.S. contribution in Rakhine State to $7.28 million since June 2012.

Inter-communal conflict in Rakhine State flared up in June and surged again in October, displacing an estimated 115,000 people and resulting in the loss of lives, housing, and livelihoods. The United Nations, international relief organizations, local non-governmental organizations, and U.S. government officials have reported critical unmet needs in food, nutrition, health, shelter, water and sanitation, as well as protection, non-food items, education, camp coordination and management.
The new assistance relieves immediate suffering of affected people and includes:

  • Food commodities for 115,000 people for two and half months;

  • Logistical support to efficiently deliver life-saving assistance to affected populations;

  • Basic household relief items for approximately 2,000 conflict-affected households; and

  • Hygiene education and promotion of safe and appropriate hygiene practices among women and children.

This assistance is provided by USAID’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) and Food for Peace (FFP) through the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) and Save the Children. The assistance will be provided to those in need in Rakhine State regardless of ethnicity and guided by international principles, including non-discrimination, respect for the dignity of people affected, and provision of assistance that meets international standards. ###
