WHO: OCHA Operations Director John Ging and UN Emergency Directors

WHAT: Mission to the Syrian Arab Republic

WHEN: 18 - 22 January 2013

WHERE: Damascus and field locations

OCHA Operations Director John Ging is scheduled to visit Damascus, Rural Damascus, Homs and Dera'a from 18 to 22 January 2013, with the Emergency Directors from FAO, IOM, UNHABITAT, UNHCR, UNICEF, UNRWA, WFP and WHO.

During the mission, Mr. Ging aims to see first-hand the magnitude of the crisis and to review the humanitarian response.

There are an estimated 4 million people in urgent need of humanitarian assistance in Syria, including at least 2 million who are internally displaced. With harsh winter conditions, people are facing heavy rains and sub-zero temperatures, often without adequate food, shelter, water or access to medical care. More than 650,000 Syrian refugees have fled the crisis for safety in neighbouring countries, North Africa and Europe.
