The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has dispatched emergency relief supplies to the Republic of Fiji following the recent cyclone which has ravaged the country.

Emergency goods, including 30 tents, 150 sleeping mats, 20 generators and 70 plastic sheets, valued at 12 million JPY, arrived at Nadi International Airport on 25 December. A handover ceremony was held at 9:45 (local time) on the following day at the government office.

The ceremony was attended by Mr Joeli Cawaki, Commissioner Western Commander, Mr Hideyuki Shiozawa, First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan in Fiji and Mr Yutaka Fukase, Senior Representative of JICA’s Fiji Office.

During the ceremony, Mr Cawaki expressed his gratitude to Japan for its prompt assistance. He also stated that the relief goods will be delivered to the affected areas, including Yasawa Islands, where many residents are living in temporary shelters.

In response, Mr Shiozawa said that Japan as a country which itself experiences many natural disasters, understood the victims’ difficult circumstances caused by this cyclone. Mr Fukase expressed his wish that the relief goods would help to re-establish the lives of those affected.

All goods will be distributed to the victims by the Fiji government.
