More groups bring hope to students affected by typhoons in Mindanao

QUEZON CITY, Dec 26 - Responding to the great challenge brought about by the recent typhoon that devastated large parts of Mindanao, Huawei Technologies Phils., Inc. and the Philippines Response to Indigenous Peoples’ and Muslim Education (Prime) have joined the Department of Education in bringing hope to the affected students in Mindanao.

Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC has turned over to officials of affected regions the P4 million donation from Prime. The assistance will be a starter fund which can be utilized by Region XI, Division of Davao del Norte and Davao Oriental in terms of mobilizing and assessment efforts on severely affected areas by the typhoon with schools catering to IP students.

Results of assessment will serve as basis for the Prime to program and recast the school and community grants to the hardest hit communities. The grant can cover the reproduction of materials used in alternative delivery mode approach, psycho-social trauma support, mobile teachers, quick feeding/medical programs, and provision of tents which will be used for instruction purposes and feeding programs.

“After the unimaginable wrath of Typhoon Pablo, our task in the Department has become more difficult but we remain positive and hope remains alive in our hearts because of the support from various sectors that continue to pour in,” said Luistro.

Meanwhile, Globe Telecom, Inc., through, Huawei Technologies Phils., Inc. has donated $10,000 to the Department of Education for the purchase of tents to serve as mobile classrooms for affected students in Region XI.

DepEd led by Undersecretary Francis Varela received the donation from Huawei Technologies Phils., Inc. Representatives from Huawei were the Head for Commercial Accounts Albert Antig and PR Manager Zhao Rui. Globe Telecom’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility Rob Nazal also attended the event.

Huawei is the technical partner of Globe Telecom, Inc, which has been supporting the Department’s Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (DRRMO) for mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction in public schools.

DepEd thanks all private institutions and partners who have been very supportive in helping the department all year-round, with or without a typhoon.

The Department continues to appeal for donations for all the victims, particularly school supplies for affected students in Mindanao. Donations may be dropped off at the following locations: DepEd Central Office – Ampitheater, Meralco Ave, Pasig City; DepEd Cebu Regional Office, Sudlon, Lahug, Cebu City; and DepEd Davao Regional Office, F. Torres Street, Davao City from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Cash donations are also accepted via DepEd’s Landbank OSEC Trust Fund, Account number: 0672-1000-20. Donors are requested to send a copy of the deposit slip to DepEd Cash Division at telefax no: 6337220 for accounting and documentation purposes. (DepEd)
