(27 November 2012, London) – The Expert Group on Responsible Business and Investment in Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas convened in London to discuss the challenges of operating and investing in fragile contexts, and to advance the implementation of responsible business and investment practices around the world. Organized by the UN Global Compact and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) initiative, and chaired by Sir Mark Moody-Stewart, this meeting brought together over 60 company, investor, academic and expert participants.
Concluding a two-year pilot project to operationalize the Guidance on Responsible Business in Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas: A Resource for Companies and Investors, project participants highlighted the array of challenges and lessons learned from this engagement, and demonstrated a strong commitment to continue to implement and champion the Guidance within their spheres of influence.
Participants engaged in constructive dialogue on a range of topics, including responsible business and investment in Myanmar, enhancing transparency and corporate disclosure – with a focus on the recently-adopted sections 1502 and 1504 of the Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform and Protection Consumer Protection Act. Additionally, two consultative sessions were held to identify ways in which the private sector can help shape the post-2015 development agenda. In particular, participants addressed the “Conflict and Fragility” dimension, and specific actions that companies and investors can undertake with Global Compact Local Networks to facilitate the implementation of responsible business and investment at the country level.
Looking ahead to 2013, Expert Group members identified priority environments for expanding dialogue and addressing the practical challenges from operating in these areas.
