Switzerland has just completed a project providing water for the flood-affected population in Rajanpur District in Punjab Province, which according to the United Nations was one of the districts most affected by the 2012 floods. According to official figures, more than 270,000 people were affected and 26 people lost their lives during these latest floods in Rajanpur.

The project was launched immediately after the disaster had struck and was implemented during the most-needed period. During this time, the SDC’s Humanitarian Aid Unit in cooperation with Muslim Aid provided 10,000 flood-affected people with a total of 50,000 litres of safe drinking water per day. Two tankers delivered the water to 12 communal water tanks holding 500 gallons each on a daily basis. The water was disinfected using the Swiss WATASOL chlorination technology, which can now be operated by the local people as they have been thoroughly trained and have acquired the necessary know-how.

With this project, Switzerland’s humanitarian aid saved the people of Punjab having to collect water from ponds, which are still contaminated.
