Baltimore, MD, October 24, 2012, 4:30 pm – Hurricane Sandy is pounding Jamaica this afternoon and is on track to make landfall on the eastern portion of Cuba. While the storm is not expected to hit Haiti directly, some areas — particularly the southern peninsula — will likely experience tropical storm conditions throughout the day today, resulting in possible floods and landslides.

Catholic Relief Services is monitoring the hurricane’s path and is preparing to respond by pre-positioning relief supplies, preparing staff for damage assessments and opening lines of communication with our partners so we can repsond quickly and effectively.

In Jamaica, CRS runs a program to train young people how to respond to a disaster — training that will prove very helpful as Jamaicans deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy’s destruction.
