Context

Bakool was the first region in Somalia declared as famine affected in July 2011. The Deyr rains in October improved pasture and water availability, livestock condition and crop growth. In February 2012, FSNAU indicated that the Deyr crop is up 396% compared to the previous five year average. While food prices reduced, food insecurity, a high prevalence of malnutrition, measles outbreaks and displacement are major issues.

The security situation is fragile with humanitarian access a major challenge. Military operations will result in displacement and vulnerability, at least in the short term.
