Mali Complex Emergency Situation Report No. 3
Please find attached the OCHA Situation Report No. 3 for Mali, dated 8 May 2012 (covering the period from 1 to 7 May 2012). The next report will be issued on or around 15 May.
HIGHLIGHTs/key priorities:
As of 5 May, the number of IDPs in Mali was estimated at 146,900. This figure needs updating for the three rebel-held northern regions (Gao, Kidal, Timbuktu).
The rate of arrival of Malian refugees in neighbouring countries decreased slightly this week. As of 6 May, over 160,000 Malian refugees had been registered in Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Niger. According to a statement by the Algerian Government in March, at least 30,000 more are in Algeria.
Fighting in Bamako from 30 April to 2 May hindered response activities and complicated coordination efforts. Despite the insecurity, some activities continued, including food distributions in the south.
Access to some rebel-held areas in the north is possible, but limited.
Humanitarian needs persist for water, food, shelter, health and protection. Vulnerable women and children living in camps particularly require a protective environment.
Appeal processes for Burkina Faso and Mauritania are expected to be issued around 15 May. An appeal process for Mali is underway and is expected to be completed by early June.
