"Guidance on Responsible Business in Conflict-Affected and High Risk Areas: A Resource for Companies and Investors" Now Available in Spanish [EN/ES]

(Bogota, 22 April 2012) – The Regional Center for the Support of the Global Compact in Latin America and the Caribbean has launched the Spanish version of the “Guidance on Responsible Business in Conflict-Affected and High -Risk Areas:A Resource for Companies and Investors”.

The Guidance, developed by the Global Compact, the Principles for Responsible Investment and an expert group comprised of company representatives, investors, civil society leaders and UN representatives is also available in English and Chinese. The document aims to assist companies in implementing responsible business practices in conflict-affected and high-risk areas, consistent with the Global Compact‘s ten principles.

The Regional Center translated the Guidance into Spanish and actively encouraged companies and Local Networks in Latin America to use it to promote dialogue with shareholders and strengthen support for the Global Compact agenda in the region.

The launch event in Bogota showcased the perspectives and experiences of companies implementing the Guidance in the energy, tourism, oil and mining sectors in Latin America: Grupo de Energía de Bogotá (Henry Navarro, VP of Stock and Corporate Planning) , Pacific Rubiales-member of the Guidance working group- (Alejandro Jimenez, CSR Manager), Aviatur (Jean Claude Bessudo, CEO), Nuqui project-supported by Bavaria-SavMiller (Josefina Klinger, Director of Mano Cambiada, a civil society organization). The featured guest speaker was Manuel Bonilla, the CEO of Barrick Gold in the Dominican Republic.

The tourism panel was moderated by Damian Cardona, Director of the UN Information Centre for Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela. The panelists discussed challenges and opportunities for tourism in conflict-affected areas. The panel on oil and mining was moderated by Carlos Franco, Director of International Standards at Cerrejon. Panelists stressed the importance of using the Guidance in both business and non-business contexts, in conflict-affected and conflict-free areas.

The program closed with a conversation between Colombia’s Vice-Comptroller, Alvaro Navas, and the Director of the Regional Center for the Support of the Global Compact in Latin America, Diana Chávez. This session highlighted the role of investors and companies, their contribution to peace and development and the importance of a sound strategy to work with governments in order to strengthen the positive impact of investment in high-risk areas and conflict-affected zones.

Colombia´s Vice-Comptroller stated that the event organized by the Regional Center contributes to a better understanding of the social, institutional and economic context in which companies operate” and that “it is essential for the advancement of corporate responsibility to build joint policies aimed to improve the development of communities and citizens”.

The launch event, held at the National Federation of Coffee Growers, gathered 200 representatives from the private sector, academia, government, diplomatic missions and civil society. ASUR, Scotiabank and Telefonica promoted the participation of their subsidiaries via videostream and the event was followed by Global Compact participants in Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Panama, Guatemala, Canada and Spain.
