DSWD sets P46.4M for Cordillera shelter project

BAGUIO CITY, April 16 (PIA) -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has allocated funds for the construction of core shelter units for the victims of typhoons Emong, Juan, and Peping.
DSWD has set P46.4 million under the Core Shelter Assistance Program (CSAP) for the construction of 801 core shelter units.
According the DSWD regional director Leonardo C. Reynoso, 232 units have been completed and handed over to beneficiaries while 266 units are being constructed and 303 units are up for construction.
A total of 81 shelter units have been constructed in Apayao, 51 units in Ifugao, 115 in Kalinga, and 507 shelter units in Mt. Province.
CSAP is a rehabilitation program which aims to provide structurally strong shelter units that can withstand 180-220 kph wind velocity to families whose houses were totally destroyed by natural and man-made calamities and who have no capacity to build or construct their own units.
The project aims to reduce the number of homeless families every year by providing a structurally strong indigenous shelter develop and promote the value of self-reliance among the beneficiaries and the community.
The core shelter unit is designed and constructed within a 60-80 square meter area with two bed rooms, a rest room, and a kitchen. The core shelter is put up in cooperation with the local government units, community, concerned line agencies and the counterpart of the family beneficiaries.
The “bayanihan” system is also being practiced by the people in the community to fast truck the building of houses, Reynoso explained. (JDP/JBZ-PIA CAR)
