The Fiji Times Limited Ltd gave $10,000 towards the Prime Ministers Flood Relief Fund from the revived Fiji Sixes Funds today.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama was handed the cheque by the newspaper’s general manager and publisher Hank Arts together with Fiji Sixes representative Jinesh Patel.

Mr Arts said The Fiji Times was playing its part to contribute to the relief fund for those affected from recent floods that hit most parts of the Western Division.

He said that Fiji Sixes, which helped provided funds for needy children to attend school and for poor needing operations, had been revived after being dormant for sometime with a committee already formed.

Mr Arts also announced that The Fiji Times will be publishing “a full page, full advertisement” on the PM’s Flood Relief Fund Appeal at least twice a week.

The Prime Minister said there were many people making generous contribution to the fund.

The Namosi Joint Venture also donated $10,000 to the fund and another $10,000 to Fiji Red Cross Society.

“The recent floods have had a significant impact and the Namosi Joint Venture wanted to do something to help those affected,” a statement from the Namosi Joint Venture said.

“The Government and relief organisations are providing help and support to people who have lost their homes and belongings and will be well placed to allocate the funds according to the greatest need.”

Meanwhile, the introduction of a tax incentive for donations made towards Prime Minister’s 2012 flood relief fund was endorsed by Cabinet today.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Prime Minister, who said that a 200 per cent tax deduction would be allowed for cash donations exceeding $1,000 to the Flood Appeal Fund. The incentive will be effective from January 27 to March 31, 2012.
