Baghdad, 22 December 2011- The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Martin Kobler, condemned in the strongest terms the series of explosions that took place today in Baghdad and that have reportedly resulted in a large number of deaths and injuries, including children.

“These horrendous crimes being committed against the Iraqi people need to stop and violence must end if this country is ever to achieve the prosperous and secure future its people duly deserve”, SRSG Kobler said. “No Iraqi citizen and most definitely no innocent child should endure what is being inflicted on them. It is the duty of all leaders in Iraq to act swiftly, responsibly and in unity to shoulder their responsibilities to end the ongoing violence. The people of Iraq have the right to live without fear for their lives, safety and security. They deserve a secure and prosperous future”, SRSG Kobler added.

SRSG Kobler extends his condolences to the families of those who were killed and his wishes for speedy recovery of those who were injured and called on Iraqi people to remain steadfast in the face of the attempts to derail Iraq’s quest for a better future.

He reiterated the United Nations’ commitment to assist the people and Government in Iraq in their endeavour to build a peaceful, democratic and prosperous Iraq.
