On Tuesday 11th October, in the presence of T.S.H. the Sovereign Prince and Princess Charlene, Monaco Collectif Humanitaire presented the results of the project initiated on the occasion of the Prince’s 50th birthday and which has enabled 139 children from developing countries to receive treatment in Monaco. After thanking and commending the involvement of each member of the Collectif, H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince announced that he wished to renew his support for the project, by allocating 450,000 € for the period 2011-2013.

After running for three and a half years, Monaco Collectif Humanitaire* has just presented extremely positive results to H.S.H. Prince Albert II.

Thanks to this incredible chain of solidarity, uniting private and public partners, 139 children from 18 developing countries received surgery and were therefore given a new lease of life.

Each child that received surgery presented a pathology (heart or orthopaedic) that could not be operated on in his/her country of origin.

At the same time, in partnership with the Government of Monaco, a capacity-building programme for healthcare staff and hospital facilities in the children’s countries of origin was implemented, so that in the long-term certain pathologies may be treated directly on site.

H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince thanked all the links of this chain for their commitment and devotion. He also announced that he wished to renew his support for the project by allocating 150,000€ per year, from 2011 to 2013, and said that he hoped that the Collectif would be able to achieve financial autonomy after this period.

The average cost of providing a child treatment is approximately 10,900 €. This amount represents part of the hospitalisation costs (the other part is covered by the hospitals themselves) and the return flights. The doctors and host families participate free of charge.

The results, as well as the high-level expertise of Monaco’s hospital establishments, have led to the Chaîne de l’Espoir, an internationally-renowned French association and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (HCR) joining the initiative.

Monaco Collectif Humanitaire is made up of Monegasque hospital establishments (Cardio Thoracic Centre, Princess Grace Hospital and Monegasque Institute of Sports Medicine and Surgery), the French associations Rencontres Africaines, Aviations Sans Frontières, la Chaîne de l’Espoir and 21 Monegasque NGOs supported by the Government of Monaco.
