On 26 August 2011, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Surapong Tovichakchaikul, Minister of Foreign Affairs, presented USD 50,000 to the World Food Programme (WFP) through Mr. Kenro Oshidari, Regional Director of WFP Thailand, to assist countries in the Horn of Africa, which have been imperiled by famine.

       The Foreign Minister stated that the Royal Thai Government is pleased and stands ready to provide assistance to the affected countries in the Horn of Africa, and hopes that the contribution will alleviate the suffering of those in need.

       The Regional Director of WFP Thailand expressed his appreciation to the Royal Thai Government and Thai people for their generosity and assistance to countries in need as well as their continued cooperation and support to the work of the WFP. He further emphasized that food shortage continues to be a crucial challenge that needs to be resolved urgently. Since July 2011, the Horn of Africa and areas nearby, comprising of Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and some parts of Kenya and Uganda, have been affected by a severe drought, causing the suffering of the population. Two million people have been reported to have fled the affected areas.

       The contribution of the Royal Thai Government not only represents Thailand’s goodwill and friendship towards countries throughout Africa, but also reflects Thailand’s intention as an active member of the international community to share its responsibility and co-operate with all parties in order to build a more peaceful and sustainable society.
