One person killed and five injured in a new Israeli escalation against the Gaza Strip; Al Mezan condemns the Israeli escalation and calls on the international community to intervene

The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) escalated their attack on the Gaza Strip. In the morning hours of Tuesday 16 August 2011, Israeli aircraft launched five aerial attacks on different areas throughout the Gaza Strip. As a result of these attacks, one person was killed and five persons were injured including a child. Medical sources described the injury of two persons as critical. The IOF also continued to attack Palestinian fishermen and any person who approach the border fence between the Gaza Strip and Israel. The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights condemns the new Israeli escalation and calls on the international community to promptly intervene to provide protection for civilians and to end the Israeli aggression.

According to the information available to Al Mezan, at approximately 12:45 am on Tuesday 16 August 2011, an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at a group of Palestinians near the Al Farouq mosque west of Az-Zaitoun neighborhood, south of Gaza city. As a result, three persons sustained critical injuries. Later, in the dawn of the same day, Mosa Younis Ishtiwei, 30, died from his wounds. Ishtiwi was from the At-Tuffah neighborhood. The other two persons were referred to hospital for medical treatment.

In a separate attack, at approximately 1:50 am on Tuesday 16 August 2011, Israeli aircraft fired three missiles at a training site for the Ezadin Al Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas movement, near Al Mahattah mosque in the At-Tuffah neighborhood, east of Gaza city. As a result, the site was damaged. No injuries or casualties were reported. One of the missiles did not explode.

At approximately 1:45 am on Tuesday 16 August 2011, Israeli helicopters fired four missiles at a training site for the Ezadin Al Qassam Brigades in the Ar-Rmeda area in Bani Suhaila, east of Khan Younis. As a result, the site sustained physical damages, but no injuries or casualties were reported.

At approximately 2:30 am on Tuesday 16 August 2011, Israeli helicopters fired about four missiles at a training site for the Ezadin Al Qassam Brigades in the evacuated settlements in the Al Hashasheen neighborhood, northwest of Rafah. As a result the site sustained physical damages, but no injuries or casualties were reported.

At approximately 3:00 am on Tuesday 16 August 2011, an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at Gaza-Egypt border south of Rafah. As a result, three persons were injured. Al Mezan identified their names as follows:
· Abdel Rahman Issam Qeshta, 7;
· Belal Ibrahim Abu Namous, 23; and
· Ammar Mohammed Abu 'Azoom, 23.

They were admitted to the Abu Yousif An-Najjar Hospital where doctors described their injuries as moderate.

The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights strongly condemns the Israeli attacks which resulted in the killing of one person and the injury of five persons. Al Mezan calls on the international to promptly intervene to provide the protection due to civilians in the occupied Palestinian territory against the Israeli attacks against them. Al Mezan expresses its concern of the ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip as the IOF are not brought to justice. Al Mezan also expresses its concern of the new Israeli escalation which comes in the context of the silence policy of the international community regarding the ongoing Israeli gross violations of the international humanitarian law and the international human rights law.
