Philippines: Some 450,000 people still in need of emergency relief, early recovery support in flood-affected Maguindanao

• The seasonal southwest monsoon aggravated by consecutive tropical cyclones brought heavy rains over Mindanao and other parts of the Philippines causing floods, flashfloods and landslides.
• The widespread flooding in Central Mindanao has affected 860,000 people. 455,000 home-based people in Maguindanao province are still in need of emergency relief and early recovery support.
• The provision of clean, safe water and waste management are the priority in the flood-affected communities in Maguindanao.
• The United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator approved a grant of US$4.9 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund for the flood response to address the urgent needs in Food, Camp Coordination and Camp Management, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Nutrition and Logistics in Mindanao.
• In other parts of the country, more than 80 floods, flashfloods and landslides have left at least 170 people dead or missing and 19,400 houses damaged in June and July, according to government reports.
• The Mid-Year Review of the Mindanao Humanitarian Action Plan was launched on 20 July in Geneva with outstanding requirements of $25.3 million. Early Recovery, Education, Coordination, Health and Protection (including Child Protection and Gender-Based Violence) are the most underfunded sectors that require urgent funding.
